Dr Annette van Onselen is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Human Nutrition in the Life and Consumer Science in the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at the University of South Africa (UNISA).
She started her academic career at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in 2011, after being in the field for 20 years. She became a Senior Lecturer at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences (SMU) in 2017 before moving to the University of South Africa (UNISA) in November 2023, she is also an Honorary Lecturer at UKZN.
Since 2011 twelve of her Master’s students and five of her PhD students graduated at SMU and UKZN.

The Cluster of Research Excellence on Sustainable Food Systems
2025 ARUA-Guild Workshop - University of Bologna
The Clusters of Research Excellence are the result of a collaboration between the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities (The Guild) and the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) and represent a new model of university partnership to strengthen collaboration between Africa and Europe in the fields of research, innovation and higher education. The University of Bologna is the European Co-Lead of the Cluster of Research Excellence on “Sustainable Food Systems” (CoRE-SFS) and together with the University of Pretoria (African Co-Lead) are directly responsible for the governance and implementation of the various activities of the Cluster, which currently includes more than 20 African and European universities and research partners.
